YAM Tunku Imran wins by big majority for presidency post

YAM Tunku Tan Sri Imran Ibni Almarhum Tuanku Ja’afar retained his post as president of the Malaysian Cricket Association for an 10th term in an exciting contest in the Biennial General Meeting held in Kuala Lumpur on Saturday. YAM Tunku Imran garnered 25 votes while his only contender Hanafiah A. Samad, a former Berita Harian journalist-turned businessman, received 11 votes. Former vice-president Datuk S. Shantha Kumar withdrew from the race.

However, there were upsets elsewhere.

Mr P. Krishnasamy, who held the post of deputy president for two terms and played a leading role alongside YAM Tunku Imran in the ‘birth of the Kinrara Oval’, the DLF Tri-series in 2006 involving West Indies, India and Australia and the 2008 ICC Under-19 World Cup in Kuala Lumpur, lost at the polls to Dato’ Dr Amarjit Singh Gill. Two other candidates – C. Sivanandan and Datuk Shantha withdrew.

Dato’ Dr Amarjit received 26 votes and Mr Krishnasamy 10.

Perak Cricket Association vice-president Mahinda Vallipuram makes a comeback after a one-term absence in a three-horse race for the two positions of vice-presidents. Sabah CA president Tuan Haji Affendi Tun Mohd Stephens received the highest number of votes – 28, followed by Mahinda (23) while Malay Cricket Association of Malaysia secretary Rosmanizam Abdullah received 19.

The Hon. Secretary post went to C. Sivanandan. He defeated FTCA committee member R. Devindran by a majority of 12 votes. Sivanandan received 24 votes.

Kedah CA president Ahmad Feisal Hj Ahmad Tajudin is the new Treasurer. He defeated Asgari Fuad Stephens by a four-vote majority. Ahmad Feisal received 20 votes against Asgari’s 16.

For the four positions of ordinary members, Malacca CA president Mohd Ridzuan Manivannan (19 votes) and Mohd Sham Jalil (18) retained their positions while the new comers are FTCA secretary Gopal Sreenevasan (16) and Pahang CA vice-president Narendran Viswanathan (22) in race that has been reduced to 10 from the original 16 nominated.
